Finding the best mattress for your needs can seem like a challenge. With all the mattress variants, style and sizes, it cam appear a daunting task.

So we have created our mattress guide to help you understand the mattress best suited to your needs.

We hope you find this a helpful read, From the Team at Mays.

Step by Step Guide

1 . Who is your mattress for and how often will it be used?

This is the first question we ask each of our customers when they are wanting to purchase a mattress. The answer to this will help narrow down straight away what you are looking for!

Little Ones?

Young children are not as heavy as us adults, so a firm mattress appears very firm to a young child.

From our experience little ones are most comfortable on a soft/medium firm mattress.

Size is also important to consider, especially if they have grown out a previous bed.

Spare Room?

When buying a mattress for a spare room there's two points to consider; who will stay and how often. This will decided how firm to choose, the size of the bed and how much you're willing to spend.

For example if your grandchildren may stay once every couple of weeks, a single medium firm mattress may suit.

Back Problems?

We regularly have customers explain that a new mattress is needed owing to continuous back aches and pains. If you are one of these then a more supportive mattress is needed. We would advise a medium/firm hybrid mattress.

Yourself?

Important factors to consider are size, budget and how firm you like your mattress.

Also think about the positions you sleep in? Sounds odd but this can tell you how firm your mattress should be!

See below for more information on mattress firmness and sleeping position

Elderly/Disabled?

For someone less mobile, sitting on the edge of the bed may become a regular thing. This can ruin the springs so a memory foam option may be a choice.

An adjustable bed is a popular choice for the less mobile to help get in and out of bed and provide more comfort than an ordinary mattress.

2. How supportive would you like your mattress?

Soft - These mattress offer the least resistance and support. When laying on a soft mattress a

gentle, soft base will contour your body. Most popular for little ones with less weight or spare

rooms with little use.

Medium - The most popular choice. A medium firm mattress will be gentle yet supportive,

contouring to your shape providing great comfort. This is great when sleeping on your side!

Firm - A firm mattress provides not only comfort but great spinal support for those with aches

and pains. A firm mattress is also best for those who sleep on their front or back!

Very Firm - Perfect for those who sleep on their back owing to its great spinal support system.

What is a Hybrid Mattress?

A hybrid mattress is a combination of both pocket springs with a comfort top layer of latex, polyfoam or memory foam. For example the SleepSoul Space Mattress is two layers of springs topped with two layers of soft foam and a layer of memory foam. Luxury!

Why We Love Our Hybrid Mattresses!

  • Comfort and Support - The combination of a pocket sprung unit and foam offers not only great comfort and support but alleviate aches and pains.

  • Breathable - The pocket sprung unit allows more airflow compared to a memory foam mattress.

  • Durability - Made to last longer. The pocket sprung unit is made of durable materials. These springs will keep bouncing back preventing the foam layers from becoming mis-shaped.

  • Weight - The pocket sprung unit provides more support to the mattress, this allows heavier weights than of a memory foam mattress.

  • Position - A Hybrid Mattress is great no matter the position you sleep in! The soft top layers allows comfort when laying on your side and the pocket sprung unit offers support when laying on your back or stomach. Brilliant!

What is a Pocket Sprung Mattress?

A pocket sprung mattress is made of individual springs enclosed in fabric. Each spring is designed to work independently, responding only when pressure is applied.

Why We Love Our Pocket Sprung Mattresses!

  • Comfort and Support - Owing to each pocket spring moving to your body shape, it aids correct spina alignment.

  • Breathable - The pocket sprung unit allows more airflow compared to a memory foam mattress.

  • Durability - Made to last longer. The springs are made of durable materials. Further more the pockets that surround each individual spring secures that spring. Creating a more durable mattress.

  • Weight - The pocket sprung unit provides more support to the mattress, this will support heavier weights than of a memory foam mattress. But do not confuse this with an open coil mattress.

  • Position - A pocket sprung unit offers support when laying on your back or stomach. So if this is your sleeping position, they're perfect for you!
